Also, there is cell mediated apoptosis in development when the higher organism needs to make room. In humans, it is the skin that disappears between our fingers and toes. It is necessary for cells to die, not because they can’t sustain themselves, but because if they don’t kill themselves cancer ensues in the higher organism.
